Why Recycle?
Recycling is very important to the environment. For example, each tonne of paper
we recycle saves approximately 18 trees. Why is this important? Well an acre of trees removes over two tonnes of carbon
dioxide, and one tree produces 120 kg of oxygen per year. Mills that use recyclable paper rather than trees use less electricity
and water, and produce less air and waste water.
There are many different items made from recycled paper and cardboard. Paper, magazines, posters etc., are used to make paper towels, bathroom tissue and napkins. Shingles for roofs are made out of recycled cardboard and newsprint. Newspaper is generally made into more newsprint. Many paper mills for example only use recycled paper to make their newsprint. Cardboard is usually made into more cardboard, but it can be used to make other products like brown napkins, shingles, paper bags, box boards, etc. When we recycle we reduce pollution of the air and water, save landfill space, save money by not having to make new products all the time, as well as help save disposal costs for businesses and residents.
